Nuevos Horizontes outreach activities include the organization of workshops for communities in Illinois and Wisconsin interested in becoming 'Immigrant Friendly Communities." These workshops are designed to bring the Latino immigrant families together with a community's service and program providers who are working with the local Latino population. The themes of these workshops are to describe the Rights and Responsibilities of Latino immigrants in a community. Often a workshop will focus on a specific sector such as education.
Workshops have addressed in addition to educational rights and responsibilities, the issues related to Latino health disparities, employment practices with Latino workers, law enforcement and legal issues related to undocumented Latinos, and social service programs targeting Latino families.
The format of the workshops, conducted in Spanish and English, is to provide basic information about services and programs available to the Latino population residing in the community as well as an opportunity for Latino families to voice their concerns and problem solve about important issues affecting Latino families. The result is "community participatory decision making" where Latino families dialogue with service providers to address specific community problems and build greater understanding with professionals from a variety of sectors who serve Latino families. Workshop activities are designed to inform and educate newly arriving immigrants about their rights within the United States . Through these workshops, communities address the barriers of literacy, language, discrimination, and poverty that Latino immigrants living in United States encounter.

Nuevos Horizontes works with University of Illinois Extension to assist their staff in better understanding issues related to Latino culture. We have worked with the University of Illinois Extension staff to develop and implement several workshops whose participants included professionals who work with Latino clients, extension staff, and Latino community leaders.

Nuevos Horizontes also collaborates with two school districts in Illinois to offer a parent support workshop every month during the school year for Latino families. Workshop topics are selected by participants and include diverse topics related to preventive health, mental health, adjusting to a new culture, information about immigration policy and other specific laws and regulations related to family care in the U.S. |
